Warriors sign Dorell Wright
The Warriors have agreed to a 3 year/ $11 million deal with small forward Dorell Wright, formerly of the Miami Super Friends.
Miami had no room or use for Wright after they made a couple under-the-radar free agent signings this week, so he was able to catch on with the Warriors for a deal far under the mid-level exception I’m sure he and his agent were hoping to get.
Chris Mullin used to say that if Biedrins didn’t last until their pick in the 2004 draft, Wright was a guy they would have strongly considered. With Mully’s uneven record in the draft I’m not sure if that’s encouraging or not, but it is what it is, as they say.
At his best, Wright is a 2-way small forward with size who can shoot a little bit, which is something this roster needs. The problem with Wright is that he’s not at his best consistently enough. The Heat waited for him for 6 years and he’s still not markedly better than he was as a rookie, although the more advanced stats do say he quietly had a very productive year last year.
Another knock on Wright is his inability to stay healthy, which is especially discouraging after the Warriors’ cavalcade of injuries last year. He’s averaged about 40 games played a year over his career, a figure that even Corey Maggette and Baron Davis would be embarrassed by.
Underwhelming career numbers aside, this is a good pickup for the Warriors. If he can build on (or at least maintain) his performance level from last year the Warriors have a legitimate small forward and a nice complimentary piece to add to Curry, Monta, Lee and Biedrins. If he can play 70 or so games a year, run the floor, play some D, board a little bit and hit the corner 3 he’ll earn his money.
Lastly, signing Wright would also seem to ensure that Anthony Morrow will not be back. The Warriors had to make a choice and they chose the bigger, more versatile player. Reasonable enough, although if Lil Bobby Rowell hadn’t unecessarily extended Stephen Jackson before last season the Warriors wouldn’t be burdened with Vladimir Radmanovic and his $7 million contract and they probably could have signed both players. Thanks again for that one, Bob.
